Copyright issues…

January 31, 2008

For those of you out there that publish your photos or art at Photobucket and other sites like Deviantart, some of you have experience with art theft. Here is another case of a site that unfortunately creates an atmosphere for art theft: http://www.polyvore.com

This link goes to the Photobucket section of Polyvore. Polyvore is apparently a site that allows members to create their own collages from images and upload them. Although their site obvious states “use your own images” several members insist on borrowing / stealing art of others and ruining it in ugly tacky collages.

If you have photos or art at Photobucket and Deviantart , check out that site to be sure your photos and artwork haven’t been stolen. They also seem to steal directly from people’s websites too. It’s pathetic how people think JUST because images are online, they must be free. At least ask permission to use something. If it’s not your art… DON’T USE IT!!!

  1. Hi. Polyvore is a web-based tool for creating collages of real world products (eg: outfits). As with any user-submission site, copyrighted images occasionally make it in without the permission of the copyright owner. If you do find any of your images that you would like removed, just email us at “copyright [!at] polyvore [dot] com” and we will respond within 24 hours.

  2. Thanks for the info.

Some friends of mine at Deviantart had their images stolen and used on your site. Thank you for the reply.

I just looked more closely at the Polyvore website and just discovered that Polyvore is actually adding stolen copyrighted images to their Image Library which are available from their own website’s search field, and inviting their members to use them within their compositions. Before I thought this was being done by their uneducated members and I thought that Polyvore was merely turning a blind eye. Turns out Polyvore is actually indexing copyrighted, stolen images in their own website’s search databaseTHIS IS COMPLETELY ILLEGAL !!!!!!! Here is a link to one of my own images http://www.polyvore.com/lindas_rambling_other_things _fairy/thing… with two images below where their members have hacked it all to sh_t ! http://www.polyvore.com/st_valentines_fairy/set?id=5 760487 And here’s another that they’ve stolen from me and is available from Polyvore’s own search function, by going to Create / choosing Items / and searching for “fantasy”. http://www.polyvore.com/fantasy_art_group_500x390_fa ntasy_bookma…

and yet another http://www.polyvore.com/faries_image_freiengel_on_ph otobucket/th… and look how they mangled it to smitherines !
http://www.polyvore.com/faerie/set?id=5518112 It looks like complete and total garbage !!!! (and on Polyvore’s official blog blog.polyvore.com/2008/01/important-note-abou t-copyright…. they actually tell artists that we should be glad because they are HELPING us sell our art. It’s a complete violation!

  4. would you please remove the comment (jan 7, 09) by theresa martin regarding polyvore from the blog? polyvore responded in a reasonable amount of time and removed the images I requested they remove. thank you.
